Star Wars Storm Trooper 3D cake

Having already made the Millenium Falcon and R2D2, this recently became the last creation in my Star Wars trilogy! Crafted out of chocolate and vanilla sponge cakes of various sizes, I was assured this Storm Trooper mask would be a big hit with the birthday ‘boy’!

Big Top cake for a circus theme party

Circus Big Top tent cake with wild animals

For Cruz’s third birthday recently (and his third birthday cake made by me!) his mum asked for a circus theme party cake.

Instead of having a small tent on top of an ordinary round or square cake, I suggested that we make the whole cake into a big top, and this is how it turned out!

The circus tent actually forms the cake and is made from a stack of vanilla sponges, sandwiched with layers of strawberry jam and vanilla butter icing. The elephant and lion standing beside the Big Top door are made of icing so pretty much the only thing Cruz can’t eat are the candles.

If you’re not thinking about a circus theme party cake then check out some of the other latest cakes for children’s birthdays on the blog pages or the web galleries.

1st birthday Pirate and Jungle cake

1st birthday Pirate and Jungle cake

1st birthday Pirate and Jungle cake

Harry’s grandmother asked me to make ‘something special’ for her first grandson’s first birthday. She lives a long way from him and wanted to treat him as she doesn’t see him as often as she’d like to – and this is the result!

He loves jungle animals and so the jungle theme formed the base of the cake and was topped with a pirate. The cake tiers were a combination of chocolate mud cakes on the top two tiers and vanilla Madeira sponge on the bottom.

A great party bag idea!

Army of spiders

An alternative to party bag cupcakes... an army of spider cakes

And as if the jungle cake wasn’t enough, the cake was accompanied by an army of colour coordinated spider cakes!

Those 88 legs and feet took an age to get through but so worth it in the end – we all loved them!

A great Mickey Mouse birthday cake design

Hand-made Mickey Mouse cake

Hand-made Mickey Mouse cake

I loved putting this Mickey Mouse cake together, watching his face come to life with the addition of each feature. It’s always a challenge to re-create such a popular and well-known Disney character but I’m sure Jenson will have known who this was straight away!

I drew the face stencil in free-hand and then hand-cut the design from icing. It’s completed with a button nose, not forgetting the shiny highlight, for a great 2nd birthday cake surprise.

Individual party bag cup cakes and a special gluten-free one for Oma

Individual party bag cup cakes and a special gluten-free one for Oma

It seems that cupcakes don’t go out of fashion and their fans cover every age range – mums think that they are great for party bags, teenagers love them for their “individuality” and kids love them because they are just for them.

One of the good things about them is it means that they can be shared out as a gift or given to individuals for special reasons: sometimes it’s because one person has an intolerance like a nut allergy, or are a Coeliac; others because they want everyone at their celebration to have individual names or decorations. No one feels left out and everyone feels special.

Ship-shaped birthday cake, HMS Gordon

Gordon is an ex-Navy man so I was asked to come up with a ship shape cake design to bring back memories of this time. The ship was carved from a square vanilla sponge cake and filled with strawberry jam and butter icing.

First birthday cake: Number One

Happy birthday Will!

Having had the honour of making his brother’s birthday cakes for a number of years, it was a huge pleasure to be able to produce this lovely colourful number one cake as Will’s first birthday cake. To top it off is a cute cuddly teddy bear modelled from sugarpaste icing, complete with his own cuddly toy bunny rabbit.

I.G.G.Y. Moshi Monster cake

Moshi Monster I.G.G.Y

7th Birthday I.G.G.Y cake - Moshi Monster theme

Popular with 7-12 year olds, I.G.G.Y. apparently stands for “I’m Gonna Get Ya!” and is the second rarest Moshi Monster. Everyday you learn something new!

I.G.G.Y. was hand cut from a large square cake and probably the hardest part was covering all those points!  Overall.. a nice childrens’ character themed cake.
